Did you know this fountain on either side of you is a work of art? Jim Piercey’s Fragmented Reflections is inspired by the architectural geometry of the Harn. The mosaics beneath the surface include slate, marble and travertine.

The forms of Fragmented Reflections are simultaneously harmonious and fractured. Look to your left at the darker slate mosaic—now look to your right. Does the design continue? The sidewalk is an important part of Fragmented Reflections, functioning both as a “bridge” over the mosaics and as a barrier to their continuity. The light stone on the right side seems almost like a photonegative of the darker stones on the left side. Though some motifs “cross” the sidewalk or seem reflected in the other side, however, there are subtle differences. Which ones do you notice?

Fragmented Reflections is one of many works of art on UF’s campus installed as part of the ongoing Art in State Buildings program
